P.J. O' Rourke once said, “No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power." It is no secret that there is evil in the world- there always has been and there always will be. Inanimate objects and ideas -money, drugs, power, hate- are not in themselves evil, but have the potential to become the manifestations of evil depending on what human beings decide to do with them. Without humans, there would be no addiction. Without humans, there would be no greed. Without humans, there would be no hate, nor prejudice. Without humans, evil does not have the ability to exist. However, we can lessen its power over society by understanding where it comes from within ourselves.

Humans like to hope that there will always be a smooth path laid out in front of them, displaying to them in black and white what is good and what is evil and how to choose between the two. Though this thinking is idealistic, it is not realistic. The ideas of good and evil have been imbedded in the human psyche since the beginning of time- (Jesus equals good, scary Satan snake in garden equals bad.) Evil lies within us all, dependent on the deepest inner-workings of our subconscious. It is only natural to possess evil as a human being due to its tempting and alluring simplicity. We cannot rid of it, for without evil, good cannot exist either. It is up to us whether or not we allow evil to slither through our subconscious and come to the surface of our working thoughts and actions.

Evil has a direct correlation with temptation. We are told not to do something, so it makes us want to do it. What if Eve was never told not to eat the apple, would she still have wanted it even if she was allowed to have it, or was she just tempted because it was forbidden? Human beings are naturally drawn to evil because it is simply easier to satisfy our temptations than to torture ourselves with longing. The "evil" way of thinking is: I see it, I want it, I'm going to have it; whereas "good" thinking is: I see it, I want it, but I can’t have it because ________. Evil does not have to make moral and ethical excuses for itself, and that is what makes it so easy to do.

Human beings have the power to do what they want with whatever they want. Some of us channel this ability into good, creating cures for illnesses using modern science, whereas others of us create meth labs using modern science. Some of us look at a stick and see a tool, while others of us look at a stick and see a weapon. Everything we create, whether it be something materialistic or something abstract, has the ability to be used for good or for evil, there is no in between. Are we going to allow our money to cause greed? Are we going to use our power to hurt people? Are we going to let drugs lead to addictions? Is our hate going to lead to racism and prejudice? It is up to us if we allow all up these things to become evil, to poison our society, to control us. We must know that we are stronger than these things. We can resist. We can.

  1. I really enjoy reading your blog. The tone of this entry was fitting to the quote you used, which is what caught my attention in the first place. I guess the fact that I agree with everything you say makes it easy to read. The sarcasm and irony are amusing and the clever pun (slithering) helps to make your point. What I got out of this was basically : Humans are stupid, they blame their "sins" on other things when really they are at fault for everything. It is not the influences that deliver destruction but the quality of human choice. I admire your ability to write and personal point of view.

  2. This blog post was a pleasure to read. Humans are the source of addiction, hate and other evil things. However, seeing that we are the source of all that is bringing us one step closer to lessening the power of evil. People have evil built in them but it's their chose on whether they use it or not. It's just takes a lot of will power for humanity to fight against all these things. Overall, the sarcasm in the blog post make it even more interesting to read! You really did cleverly make your point.

  3. I agree with your statement that human biengs (or at least in my opinion people in America) believe that a path will just be laid out. You are correct in your statement, it is truly a sad realization to know how far we have come just to fall down this far too complacent path.

  4. Wow Kristyn you never seize to amaze me. First off i love reading the pieces you write because knowing you of course your going to put in your own opinion on it and its always so sophisticated. I really liked this quote that you choose and the way you responded to it really fit the whole vibe I got from reading it. You have a valid point as humans we are naturally greedy but we never want to take responsibility for our greed or our "sins" as Angelina said we are really the ones at fault for what we do.

  5. Kristyn, I love the quote you choose and the way you were able to set this contrast between good and evil. I agree with your statement that by lessening the power of evil over society is to first understand "where it comes from within ourselves". By alluding to "Eve" and the "Forsaken apple", I can once again agree with you that people(no one in particular)are so easily tempted, just for self-satisfaction.
Overall, I can honestly say that you have an amazing insight and sharp perceptibility towards the world!

  6. Really like it, good job. People do try to find an easier way through life, but that is in our nature. It isn't bad or anything, it's not evil, it is just being lazy. Remember, evil and good are just concepts. And different people see good in one way, another in another. It's like perfection, nothing is perfect, nothing is. It is in one's mind that something is perfect. I can draw an oval and say it is a perfect circle, because it is perfect to me. Evil and good are seen differently everywhere. So there is no real definition of good nor evil.

  7. Whenever I read any of your pieces of writing I can not do anything but enjoy it. Your word usage is a great reflection of your personality and it is really important to show that in all types of writing. I agree with your statement that," Human beings are naturally drawn to evil because it is simply easier..." If you are a true person (that will not disagree because of what others may say/think) you have to agree also, its natural.
